![]() ![]() ![]() we always want to say something with the Saw movies. This has been going on for years and years and years. "I mean, sadly, the reality is this has been an issue long before George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Director Darren Lynn Bousman is quoted by MSN (via Io9) as saying about the subject matter and its connection to the Spiral story in May 2021: With the social climate in the United States being what it's been in the last few years, it's easy to see how some of the major events and movements related to police brutality helped inspire part of Spiral. He sees his string of violence as fitting vengeance for policemen who abuse their power (his own father was unjustly killed by police), and Zeke's father also ends up being killed by a SWAT team after being framed by William to look as if he's holding a gun in a tense moment. The Saw installment ends with the revelation that Zeke's (Chris Rock) partner, William (Max Minghella), has been the Jigsaw copycat all along. Like the other Saw movies, Spiral isn't 100% based on a true story however, it does similarly draw many of its themes - especially socially-conscious ones - from real life. Saw's Jigsaw Killer Was Inspired By A Real-Life Event Though the concept is reasonably far-fetched by most people's standards, the original inspirations for Whannell and Wan's Saw franchise came from ideas pulled out of real-life stories. It managed to bring in nearly $165 million globally, which is impressive for such a brutal film. ![]() While all films in the franchise have been fairly popular and successful, Saw III is number one in terms of earnings. Regardless, the franchise has been a turning point not only for the horror genre, but for Leigh Whannell and James Wan, who have gone on to have incredible careers in horror and beyond. This makes ten if factoring in James Wan's short film that started it all. Factoring in the latest installment, Spiral, there's a total of nine Saw films. Like John Kramer/Jigsaw himself, the Saw franchise didn't fade away as quickly as some people might have expected. However, the basis of the first film is loosely based on a couple of real events and people that inspired the creators of this long-running horror franchise. Of all the ways to describe the Saw horror movies, "inspired by a true story" probably isn't one that's commonly thought of. ![]()
